WHILE YOU ARE AWAY

Plan for a water leak before you leave.

A leak alert is useful only when someone knows what to do next. Decide who gets the alert, who can enter and who can authorize repairs.

Start here

  • Confirm shutoff instructions with a professional.
  • Assign an alert recipient and backup contact.
  • Keep photos, findings and repair records together.

Confirm the shutoff plan

Travelers advises knowing the main and individual shutoff locations, considering leak sensors, and consulting a professional before shutting off the main water supply for an extended absence.

Check which systems depend on water

Ask the qualified provider which parts of your property must stay supplied. Automatic fire sprinklers and other connected systems need specific consideration before an automatic shutoff is installed.

Travelers notes that some sensors can notify a designated caretaker and some systems can stop the water supply. Confirm the actual capabilities and limitations of your equipment.

Decide what happens after an alert

Write the response plan in plain language and store it with your private property instructions. A text notification alone does not authorize entry, a shutoff or a repair.

  • Name the primary and backup contact.
  • Record who may enter and under what conditions.
  • Provide the approved plumber’s details.
  • Confirm who can authorize work and any spending limit.

Document visible concerns

Lantern’s agreed visual checks may include accessible sink cabinets, supply connections, laundry areas and water-heater surroundings. If we observe water or staining, we record it and contact you.

Periodic visits cannot guarantee detection between appointments. Sensors and scheduled visits serve different roles; neither is a promise that damage will be prevented.

Respond safely

Do not enter an unsafe property or an area with potential electrical hazards. Use appropriate professionals for repairs and restoration, and notify your insurer as its policy requires.

Keep the observed condition, communication and authorized actions in one record so the people handling the issue have the same information.
